Dental Crowns Can Improve Aesthetics and Provide Strength
Dental crowns are a highly sought after solution for both cosmetic and restorativedental needs. Dr. Todd J. Shainholtz offers these restorations to cover damaged or broken teeth and provide vital strength, protection, and aesthetics. Crowns can also be used in conjunction with dental implants to replace missing teeth. Our Eagle, CO, practice offers personalized services and a patient-focused approach, creating a pleasant experience for every treatment.
What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are tooth-shaped restorations, also known as caps. A crown might be appropriate for your dental needs if you suffer from issues such as a weak and broken tooth or discoloration. There are several types of crowns available depending on your particular circumstances. Our practice offers different materials and fabrication techniques to provide your customized crown. In some cases, we can even provide convenient, same-day treatment with our advanced CEREC® technology. During a consultation, we can help you understand all of your options and choose the best solution for you.
Varied Uses and Applications
For patients receiving a dental crown for strictly cosmetic reasons, the most popular materials are ceramic or porcelain. As a cosmetic treatment, crowns can conceal many aesthetic concerns such as a cracked or chipped tooth, damage from age and wear, or unevenness caused by grinding. Porcelain is frequently preferred as it can often look the same, or even better, than the original tooth.
Restorative dental crowns are applied to damaged teeth to restore proper form and function, addressing a range of issues:
- Cracks that do not extend beneath the gums
- Chips, breaks, and other structural damage
- Cavities that are too large for a dental filling
- A tooth that has undergone root canal therapy
The type of material for these restorations can be chosen based on your preferences. In addition to porcelain and ceramic, a gold or porcelain-fused-to-metal crown are regular options to choose from.
Preparation and Placement
Each dental crown requires exact procedures to ensure proper strength to withstand regular use and, in the case of porcelain or ceramic crowns, optimal aesthetics to achieve the most natural-looking appearance. Dr. Shainholtz takes pride in his craft and is dedicated to working with patients to create a smile they will love. Each dental crown procedure is done with the utmost care, and he will perform all stages of your treatment himself for optimal results.
Before placing a crown, Dr. Shainholtz will examine and prepare your tooth. Once he determines that a crown is the best solution for your needs, he will gently reshape the tooth to ensure a proper fit. We will then take highly detailed scans of your bite to design your custom restoration. Our practice offers both traditional and same-day CEREC restorations. Placing a traditional dental crown generally requires two office visits and Dr. Shainholtz will provide a temporary crown to protect your tooth until your follow-up appointment.
Each dental crown procedure is done with the utmost care, and Dr. Shainholtz will perform all stages of your treatment himself for optimal results.
Once all necessary preparations are complete, a permanent crown will be crafted. If you are receiving a traditional restoration, it will typically take two weeks to receive your restoration. For patients receiving a crown with state-of-the-art CEREC system, we can usually provide your restoration in less than an hour. Dr. Shainholtz can design your crown on a chair-side computer and discuss any concerns you may have. Once the designs are complete, an in-office milling unit will carve your restoration from a solid piece of porcelain. In a single appointment, you can leave our office with a fully restored tooth and healthy smile. Once crowns are in place, they can be cared for just like natural teeth.
